From the manufacturer:
The very reason we at Tama have created our new STAR drums was to answer the desire of master drummers who have spent long hours developing their skills to be able to once again experience the visceral thrill they felt when they first played, and to feel the instinctual urge and excitement rooted in their DNA.
The response of STAR drums reflects even the smallest nuances in touch, for a difference that drummers can actually feel and that allows for the expression of the music hidden deep within their subconscious. The separation achieved by minimizing sound interference between each drum as much as possible provides immediate and accurate expression with any style or feel, and the most complex phrases come out sounding fluid and musical. The feel of STAR drums is enhanced by superior design that converts energy produced by sticking to sound with minimum loss, while at the same time the reactive force felt in the hands when a drum is struck is minimized. This produces a characteristic soft feel with sticks as if they are directly touching the high-density air that circulates within the shells as they are compressed with each hit. All of this comes together in the harmonious sound of STAR drums so that even the most refined players can recapture "that feel" from when they first played and feel a renewed joy and passion in making music.

In the '80s TAMA's Superstars and Imperialstars reigned supreme - the perfect drums for the times. From the Brady website:
In a copycat world where so much is becoming the same, nothing sounds like a Brady because nothing is built like a Brady. Chris Brady has never felt the need to duplicate traditional manufacturing techniques used by other established drum manufacturers. Instead, his creations are formed purely on the basis of how a drum should sound - all economic considerations aside. Corporate entities tend to build drums in their own image, or as replications of what others have done. That’s why Brady has remained relatively small and fiercely independent for 30 years. It‘s essential to who we are. As one of the last autonomous well-known drum companies in the world, we can avoid the bureaucracies and red tape that strangle new and innovative ideas. Perhaps that is why - in a world of homogenized instruments - Brady drums are so remarkably, refreshingly different.
From our workshop in rural Western Australia, Chris and his team painstakingly handcraft magnificent native hardwoods into shells of unprecedented sound and quality. Here, craftsmanship is elevated to a fine art form by handcrafting shells into three different styles of construction, each in a class by itself: Ply, Block and Solid.
Chris’ formula for our diverse collection involves a timber’s grain structure, hardness, shell thickness, shell diameter, shell depth and - of course - the unique acoustical characteristics of each of our Australian hardwoods, coupled with the construction method of the shell itself.
Through the use of relatively unknown indigenous Australian timbers and Chris' progressive approach to drum design, we are proud to offer you an exquisite range of drums, created for the discerning musician to enjoy.

Yamaha designed the new Absolute Series drums with two points in mind. First: to develop a shell that has as wide an expressive range as possible; and second: to create a drum that faithfully reproduces every nuance in your playing— from a tap to full stroke. In other words, to craft a drum that delivers the tonal consistency and volume you expect in relation to player input.
The new Absolute Hybrid Series inherits the hybrid shell technology found on Yamaha's flagship PHX Series. On Absolute Hybrid shells, the design consists of a core ply of wenge a very hard and heavy wood native to Africa, sandwiched between plies of maple, well known for its clear tone. This hybrid design delivers a drum tone that plays rich and clear across the full dynamic range, from pianissimo to fortissimo.

About the Reference Pure series:
Pearl starts the process by choosing thinner plies of prized Maple, hand selected Birch and rare African Mahogany. While Reference drums use a rotating combination of both 1.6mm and .9mm wood plies in its shell construction, the Reference Pure uses only .9mm thick plies in its construction. The result is a thin, resonant, extremely vibrant yet powerful near-field experience for the player with the wonderful accentuation effects of Birch and African Mahogany placed exactly where they are needed most.
Reference Pure Series drums use a combination of task specific bearing edges and 3 time proven woods: Birch, Maple, and African Mahogany. Using Maple as a sole material has long been the traditional choice for shells and for good reason. Maple provides smooth, well balanced tone that is perfect for a 12" tom. Subsequently, all Reference Series 12" toms are composed of 6 thin plies of Maple. The only single wood shell in the series. The 10" and 8" toms receive 4 thin plies of Maple with 2 inner thin plies of Birch for cut and attack. And for maximum response, all 13" and smaller toms have a rounded 45° bearing edge.
Beginning with the 13" tom and larger, Mahogany is added to the inner plies to increase the lower frequencies and accentuate the warmth of the Maple. The 14" toms and larger begin using Pearl's fully rounded bearing edge for even more shell contact. The 18" and 20" bass drums use 4 inner thin plies of Mahogany with 2 outer thin plies of Maple. As the size of the bass drums increase, so does the amount of Mahogany. The 22" and 24" bass drums incorporate an amazing 6 inner thin plies of Mahogany surrounded by 2 outer thin plies of Maple for the ultimate in solid responsive bass frequencies.
To maintain maximum resonance, Pearl's Reference Pure features their super low-mass elegantly designed STL Tube Lugs and thin Fat Tone Hoops with an exclusive hemmed and welded edge resulting in a hoop that is both lightweight and extremely strong to further promote maximum resonance.
For those looking for a thin shell alternative to the Reference series, this is your kit.
Sizes on this kit are 10x8, 12x9, 16x16, and 22x18. Tom holders and hardware not included.

When we set about designing the Absolute Hybrid Maple, we started with the most important aspect of a musical instrument, the sound. We wanted these new drums to perform at all dynamic levels. From a whisper to a thunder, a drum should respond to the drummer’s touch, allowing them to express their every emotion. We then considered other characteristics of a great drum. It should feel good to play, it should be a thing of beauty to the eye, and has to withstand the rigors of years of performance.
Over three years, we built prototypes that were put to the test, enlisting the help of our roster of artists in virtually every genre--some of the most critical ears in the industry. We think you will hear that we succeeded in creating an instrument that drummers can express their every thought, every feeling and creative idea that comes to them. An instrument that is a thing of beauty to the ears and the eyes and that will last for generations.
Drum Sizes are 12x8, 14x13, 14x18, and 6x14
We at CDE custom ordered this C&C 3 piece kit in slightly shallower sizes than usual; 13x8, 15x14, and 24x12. This beautiful "formica butcher block" finish looks like a wood grain, but is actually a laminate. The tom shells are 1960s Rogers style, thin 5 ply maple with reinforcement rings and rounded edges. The kick is slightly thicker, 6 ply maple with reinforcement rings. The toms sport a split lug design, with the brand new C&C proprietary lugs, and the kick has a center lug design. The inlays on the bass drum are 3/4" matching formica laminate over black finish on the hoops.
C&C's first years were spent building custom drums. The drums from this era were a straight maple shell with a sharper bearing edge designed by owner Bill Cardwell. The Gladstone series is made with 7 plies of New England Rock Maple. It has the attack and projection known for a maple shell but with a warm tone that makes for a very musical and versatile drum. This line comes standard with Triple Flanged Hoops and C&C's brand new proprietary single ended lug. This is an exciting addition, as it reintroduces the line that put C&C on the map.
This kit features sizes of 13x8, 16x14, and 24x14, with all maple shells.
This 1950s Gretsch 3 piece drum set is in excellent condition. Sizes are 13x9, 16x16, and 22x14. The wrap has just enough of a yellowed tint, consistent from drum to drum, to give this kit some charm. The hoops are "stick chopper" hoops, and the batter and resonant heads on the toms are the original calf skin heads (in excellent condition and sounding great). The bass drum is outfitted with coated Ambassadors. All the chrome is in excellent condition, with no pitting and bright chrome. The shells are all 3 ply maple/gum shells with classic reverse round over Gretsch bearing edges. The 13x9 has silver sealer on the interior with no tag, and the 16x16 and 22x14 both have natural maple interiors.
